Higher Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet Scores: The Hard Way or The Easier Way

It’s common knowledge, we’re all happy when the targets are breaking, and rightfully so. Along with this happiness…many are then mystified by the ongoing absence of any real improvement in their shooting. Understandably…it being our nature…our final score seems to always get the most attention. And why not…score is important, right? Yes, it is. What’s being overlooked, however, is how to build higher scores, consistently. In my 3rd book…”Beyond The Target” …I discuss a skill improvement process called Kaizen. Kaizen being a form of skill progression that emphasizes the gradual but constant, uninterrupted process of ...

Hello again…or maybe this is your first time here? Either way, I very much appreciate your stopping by. That you are here says you may be looking to improve your shooting? If that’s so let me begin by saying, most definitely, there are answers to your good questions. As all of us search for those answers…what’s better or best in our game…we might want to remember that there can be more than one consideration on the table. Higher Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet Scores: The Hard Way or The Easier Way

Eye Dominance Testing and Issues in Sporting Clays, Skeet and Trap  . . . Go Slowly Please I’ve just finished reading Peter Blakely’s informative article “EYE DOMINANCE Isn’t All It Seems,” in the March 2017 issue of Clay Target Nation. Based on my experience, Peter’s descriptive explanations are well written and very much on the mark, especially the high numbers of women who are cross or center dominant. When I went through Instructor certification training in the mid-1990's, we were taught that a cross-dominant shooter…an individual whose mounted gun was not under the dominant eye…could not hit targets with both eyes open. ...

Higher Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet Scores: The Hard Way or The Easier Way

The Truths in the clay target disciplines are not always accepted or met with approval. Myths die hard…especially older ones that have been handed down for generations. A classic example of this is choosing a choke for the target being presented. During the Paragon CIS classes, Instructor Candidates and their students are introduced to some revealing facts. David Taylor was a shooter in the box with Instructor Candidate Kate Ahnstrom. When asked to shoot the longer crossing target at slightly over 40 yards, David asked Kate if he could change his Skeet choke to something tighter. Kate correctly asked David to trust his Skeet choke, which he did, albeit with a little reluctance. ...

Higher Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet Scores: The Hard Way or The Easier Way

Trust in the Shooting BoxLike yourselves, I too have climbed that long hill to improvement, consistency and higher clay target (sporting clays, skeet, trap) scores. While that journey is one I’d gladly do again for the sweet victories and accomplishments, it’s sure had its rough moments as well. No doubt, you can relate to both. Here are 2 very important considerations that revealed themselves to me many years ago during my journey, which, thankfully, is still ongoing.  First, the shooting/scoring skills we seek and aspire to have to be built. While some do progress faster than others, that sometimes-obstinate learning curve applies to everyone, no exceptions. ...
