Before every lesson, I ask the shooter sitting in front of me one simple question:
“What is the most important thing you want to accomplish today?”
Usually, the answers are pretty predictable.
Break more targets.
Become more consistent.
Figure out why I keep missing that presentation.
Shoot higher scores.
Then, every once in a while, a lesson takes an unexpected turn.
To improve their shooting, three ladies traveled from Florida to spend time with me at my home club, River Bend.
Well into lesson #1, we moved to a rabbit presentation.
Nicely dressed and experienced, she looked at me and said, “No.”
No? Politely, I asked why?
Quietly, she replied, “I’ve shot at dozens of rabbits. Never hit a single one.”
She and I took a quiet moment.
Holding up 1 shell, I asked her for 1 shot using the Paragon method. Just 1.
Reluctantly, she agreed. 1 shell. No more.
I explained the simple, one-step method I learned in the UK.
She did as I asked. X!
Handing the gun to her friend, she turned, put her arms around me and asked if I was married!
Cheryl still laughs about it. So do I.
Count 'em, 6 more X’s in a row.
The point of my story being…every single shooter, regardless of age, gender or skill level, can improve. The potential is always there.
All that’s unknown are the simple steps in making a successful shot. Nothing more.
Target and swing mystery ends immediately once the simple set-up and swing steps are learned. Emphasis on the word simple.
As the lesson progressed, my 3 ladies got something they were hoping for.
Their mysterious X’s and O’s now made sense.
No more: why did that target break? Why did the next one not?
Now they were seeing their muzzle “work with” the target.
Each lady gained something my students tell me again and again: clarity.
Many shooters believe more targets, more shells and more practice will automatically produce better scores. It might. Sometimes.
