Shooter expectations derail a good swing before a single shell goes into the chamber. That's where most rounds are lost — not at the target, but in the set-up before the call.
Part Four. Here's what may be missing in your shooting and where three pieces finally connect everything into a dependable shooting system.
When a target does — or doesn't — break, why that happened remains unknown. No answers. No real plan for the next shell. Shooting method? Hope.
Three key components are at work here, each absent in the typical approach to the target.
Components One and Two
First: the absence of a precise, step-by-step set-up and swing — a technique that will break the target.
Second: a 100% dependable shooting method.
To raise your skill level, purposeful practice must include both 1) your detailed knowledge of how to correctly apply the right shooting method for this target; AND 2) the shooting method being full-time dependable.
Without both, a shooter cannot consistently fix a miss with one shell — or repeat an X swing on purpose. Following the above ends the frustrating mysteries.
Books One and Three — Take Your Best Shot and Beyond The Target — lay out both, step by step. The system is there. It works.
Component Three — The Mental Game
A few billion words have been written about this in other sports. Here's how it applies in ours.
A DEFINING ANALOGY
In high school, you took Driver Education. Learned the basics: how to accelerate smoothly; stop on time; make good turns around other cars and obstacles; obey signs; back up safely.
First time behind the wheel alone — key in the ignition, engine running — where is your attention? Right. On all your necessaries. Every second of this drive requires your undivided attention. No interruptions. All the way to Grandma's house.
For the shooter, predictable Xs require putting all your attention on one swing, one target, precisely guiding your gun.
But, if your attention is on the shot outcome — hopes, expectations, fear of missing, your score on this station, trying to win — the results are inconsistent. OXXOOX. Attention on precisely guiding the gun? Absent.
Question: with all your attention out there on the outcome, was there any attention left for precisely building an X swing?
The Formula
Long runs of Xs — consistently — are not an accident.
Using a 100% dependable shooting method, whether you're shooting Report Pairs, True Pairs, or singles, what's required now is staying mentally focused on building one X swing. One shell. One target. 100% attention on that one swing. No interruptions.
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = XXXXXX
Next station, repeat. First target to last. That's how it's done.
Parts One through Four are now complete — the full system is in your capable hands.
