Perception Versus Reality

When an entry-level shooter decides to work with me, I can almost always count on his or her open mind and eagerness to listen. That's because from their perspective of "why did that just happen," they have little or no experience to fall back on. X's and 0's are a complete mystery. That's OK of course, and very much understandable. Underway enthusiastically, instruction is received and implemented with little if any resistance. Predictably, student comprehension and progress accelerate rapidly. Here's a common, subtle difference with a more experienced shooter in a lesson. XXXXXX. We're off to a good start, yes? My student's thinking, "Darn right we are! I smoked those targets!" ...

Ammunition...A Few Simple Truths

Perception Versus Reality

Ammunition, assuming 12 gauge… A few important numbers:1) 2 3/4 DRAM loads. Dram is the amount of powder in the shell. 3 DRAM and higher = more recoil and are contraindicated in too many ways to count. 2 3/4 DRAM loads hit the magic fps number…UNDER 1,200 fps.2) 1,200 fps or preferably a bit less will break every fair target presentation on this earth…consistently. 1,150 to 1,180 fps.3) First choice is either 7/8 oz or 1 oz loads. Both are 100% dependable. 2nd choice is 1 1/8 oz loads. Like powder, more shot = more recoil.  4) Shot size: 8’s put more pellets in the pattern…best for 80-90% of our targets inside 40 yards. 7 1/2’s (larger ...

Perception Versus Reality

XOXOOX  1. Doing it wrong is totally understandable. Doing it wrong too long isn't.     Sucess favors the prepared. 2. Complacency: Mind What Matters    When focus wanders, so will the muzzle. Missing is inevitable but giving them away speaks to motivation. 3. Failure Hurts    It's just a flat tire. Fix it and get back in the race. 4. Missing: It's Business Not Personal    Self-criticism is more exhausting than pushing a refrigerator up a hill. 5. Balancing: Commitments and Expectations    We can't take more out of sporting clays than we put in.   Thanks for stopping by. Be safe and I hope to ...

Break More Clay Targets

Perception Versus Reality

Very understandably, many shooters believe the “breakpoint" is the most important “place” on the target’s flight path. After all . . . that’s where the target is hit or missed. So their point appears justified. However . . . I believe something critically important has been overlooked. Here is the question: Way back in the very beginning of your swing movement . . . if your bird/barrel “relationship" is incorrect . . . why would that relationship be correct later in the swing at the breakpoint? If the swing starts incorrectly . . . why would it end correctly at the breakpoint? It’s way back in the beginning of the ...
